Want to Skate with Confidence, Don't Make These Rookie Mistakes

5 Biggest Mistakes Inline Skaters Make When Buying Their First Skates

At Bayside Blades, we’re passionate about helping every skater find the perfect pair of skates to fuel their skating dreams. But for first-time buyers, it’s easy to make missteps that can hinder their experience. To help avoid this, we have put together a list of the five biggest mistakes inline skaters make when purchasing their first skates, and how to avoid them.

1. Ignoring Proper Sizing (Your Shoe Size is Rarely Your Skate Size)

One of the most common errors is buying skates that don’t fit correctly. Skates that are too big lead to blisters and poor control, while overly tight ones cause discomfort. Unlike street shoes, inline skates should fit snugly with minimal wiggle room. Almost everyone purchases their first pair of skates too big.

Tip: Measure your foot using a foot tracing guide and check brand-specific sizing charts, as sizes vary (e.g., Rollerblade vs. K2). Try on skates or consult with our team at 1300 665 272 for expert sizing advice.

2. Choosing Based on Price Alone (The Bitter Taste of Inferior Performance Outlasts the Joy of Initial Savings)

It’s tempting to grab the cheapest pair, especially for beginners, but low-cost skates often lack durability, support, or quality components. Skates under $150 may wear out quickly or compromise performance, leading to frustration. The difference between a real Cricket Bat and a plastic toy bat is easy to define, this line is much harder to distinguish, by the untrained eye, in the Inline Skate world.

Tip: Invest in a mid-range option like the Rollerblade Zetrablade ($199-$249) or K2 Surge 80 ($229-$279), which balances affordability with comfort and reliability for recreational skating.

3. Overlooking Skating Goals (It's Always More Enjoyable With The Right Tools)

Not all skates are created equal. Buying a fitness skate for urban freestyle or a speed skate for casual cruising can lead to disappointment. Beginners often don’t consider their skating environment or goals (e.g., park trails vs. street commuting).

Tip: Define your skating style—recreational, fitness, or urban—and choose accordingly. For example, the Zetrablade’s 80mm wheels are great for casual stability, while larger wheels suit longer distances.

4. Not Purchasing Suitable Protective Gear (Always Wear Suitable Protection)

Many first-time skaters skip or undervalue protective gear, assuming they won’t fall or need it. Inadequate protection—like missing wrist guards or helmets—can lead to injuries, especially for beginners still mastering balance.

Tip: Invest in a full set of protective gear suited to your skill level, including a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads. Brands like Triple Eight offer beginner-friendly kits. Contact our team at Bayside Blades for recommendations on gear that matches your skating ability.

5. Not Prioritising Comfort and Looks, Over Support (There's a Difference Between Shop Fit and Skate Fit)

Comfort is king, but new skaters often focus on looks over fit. Skates with thin liners or weak cuffs can lead to foot fatigue or ankle wobbles, especially during longer sessions.

Tip: Opt for skates with padded liners and high cuffs, like the K2 Surge 80’s Vortech ventilation or Zetrablade’s Training liner. Test the closure system (laces, straps, buckles) for a secure, snug fit.

Skate Smarter with Bayside Blades. (It's The Very Reason We Exist)

Avoid these pitfalls by choosing skates and gear that match your size, goals, and comfort needs. At Bayside Blades, we’re here to guide you every step of the way—whether it’s picking the perfect pair or mastering your first glide.
